Astronomical Clock

Hello Prague Czech, this is our itinerary of Prague! Or as the locals know it, Praha and the capital of Czech Republic. We visited Prague the end of July summer of 2014 when we were on our Europe Trip. We came form Wroclaw, Poland (Read about the Gnome Capital HERE) and as always we traveled by train. Our train adventure from Poland to Czech was an interesting one. The direct train from Wroclaw to Prague did not exist, and neither did 2 trains without having an extremely long travel day on trains, with lengthy layovers. The quickest route to get to Czech included going back to Germany. So 3 countries in one day it was!

We caught the train bright and early from Wroclaw, Poland to Dresden, Germany with a 1 hour wait, until we could catch the direct train to Prague. And because Prague is a popular tourist city to explore, the train was extremely full and busy. So we do suggest pre buying the train tickets if possible during the summer months, we only booked 2 days in advance.

Czech does not run on the euro for the currency but their own Czech crown. We grabbed our currency when we arrived at the big train station with everyone else trying to grab their money as well. We also grabbed a tourist map so we could figure out where we are and where to go in the city. Our tourist map offered a Free Walking Tour every day at 11 am & 2pm, and the back of it had many things to see and do but mostly night life, bars and pub crawls.

Prague Castle

Prague is a great city, we managed to walk around the city on foot which we enjoy the most. The reason we travel so much by foot is we can see so much more of the people and city, but best of yet change direction at any moment when we find something of interest or stop when we please to take it all in. If walking by foot isn’t for you, Prague has many different transportation methods with different price points too, anything from Segway tours, a small train trolly to take you up to the castle, or taxi, and bike rentals/tours.

Upon our first adventure towards the attracts, we walked along the river only to stumble across a river side pub. Located down the stairwell by the river with a live band playing some great music which we knew all to well, had some great service and started to taste some of the local Czech beer. Because of the location of the pub on the river side, we had a great view of  the Prague Castle, the bridges, and could see the numerous paddles boats playing on the river.

The river runs right through the city of Prague, so it’s easy to follow it down to the attractions. Of course you will find the Charles Bridge, very busy with so many tourists trying to cross it, while also stopping to look at all the statues and stop to admire the items or trinkets for sale on the bridge. This bridge is very busy and easy for pick-pockets to take things out of open pockets & bags. So keep your items close! There are more then just this bridge to cross and admire, if you are looking for another route to use.

Things To See In Prague

Mini Eiffel Tower

Across the bridges you will find Prague Castle at the top, it’s by far the largest castle in Europe and a sight to see, both from afar and from the castle. It’s easy to find, cause the amount of people heading up to visit it, or the train trolley as well. The castle is huge with lots of ground to cover, and many more things to see and visit. We walked around the castle and area to measure just how big it is, and checked out a couple of buildings.

Once upon the hill there is more to see then just the castle, on one side you will find the Petrin Lookout Tower AKA the Mini Eiffel Tower, we didn’t go to the top because of the large line up, but it would give one great view of the city from the top. On the other side of the Prague Castle is a beautiful park you can walk through looking down on the river with the massive city, and Old Town area. This will lead you to the Beer Garden! We aren’t making this up, it’s really on the map of things to do in the city. We did walk to find it of course, and sure glad we did because it’s a nice place to relax and have a beer while enjoying the view of the city.

Prague has a bunch of locally made beer in their country, as does most of Europe. So we did our best to taste test as much as possible, it’s hard to resist when it’s so cheap to drink tasty beer. The most common was the dark or light beer, and mostly in 2 sizes. So we often started small to see if we enjoyed it enough to order another larger glass.

View From Clock Tower

Like most old cities, Prague has an Old Town Square. Which all Old Town Squares are unique in their own way, but Prague has one of the best because of the Astronomical Clock Tower, the oldest that is still in use today. Very neat to watch and see the clock tower tick by every minute and the hour mark, and for a very reasonable price you can visit the top of the tower. We took the trip to the top to get a view of the old area and everything below us. At the top it has many information plaques about the view in front of you; such as the Prague Castle, Old Town Bridge Tower & Charles Bridge, National Theatre, etc.

We enjoyed our visit to Prague and the country of Czech, but our next stop on the map is Brno. Thanks for checking our our short itinerary of Prague.
